When you sign up, CalCoach asks a few questions and uses your answers to work out a daily calorie target and a split of protein, carbs and fat.

What sign-up asks

  • Your goal, such as losing body fat, maintaining, building muscle, fuelling your training or eating better.
  • Your gender, date of birth, height and weight.
  • How active your day is outside of workouts, from "Mostly sitting" to "Manual Labour".
  • How often you work out each week.
  • Your target weight and how fast you want to get there ("Slow & Steady", "Moderate" or "Quicker").

You may also be asked what usually gets in the way and why the goal matters to you. Those answers shape how Cal talks to you, not the numbers.

How the numbers are worked out

  1. Your resting energy needs are estimated with the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, from your gender, age, height and weight.
  2. That figure is scaled up for your daily activity and how often you work out, which gives your estimated daily energy use.
  3. If you are losing weight, your target sits 10%, 15% or 20% below that, depending on your pace. If you are building muscle, it sits 5%, 10% or 15% above. For every other goal it matches your daily energy use.
  4. The target never goes below a safe minimum (1,200 kcal for women, 1,500 kcal for men, 1,350 kcal otherwise) and is rounded to the nearest 50.

Your macros follow from the calorie target:

  • Protein is 1.6 g per kg of body weight, or 2 g per kg if you are building muscle. At a BMI of 30 or more it is based on estimated lean mass instead.
  • Fat is 25% of calories when losing weight and 30% otherwise.
  • Carbs make up the rest.

Where to see your targets

  • The dials at the top of Chat show what is left of each target today.
  • The Diary tab shows today's calories and macros against your targets.
  • Account → Daily Targets lists your calorie target and macro percentages, with the grams for each.

If you work with a coach, they can set your targets for you, so yours may differ from the calculation above.
