You log exercise by telling Cal about it in chat. Each workout is saved as its own entry with a name, the calories it burned and, if you give it, how long it lasted.
Log a workout
- Open Chat. You can also long-press the CalCoach app icon and choose Log Exercise.
- Describe the session, for example "45 minute spin class, my watch says 420 kcal" or "ran 5k in 28 minutes yesterday".
- Cal logs it and shows an exercise card with Calories Burned and Duration.
Mention the day if it wasn't today ("yesterday", "last Saturday") and Cal files it on that day. You can add details such as distance or heart rate and Cal keeps them as notes.
When you don't give a calorie figure
Cal estimates it from the activity, how long and how hard you went, and your body weight. Heavier bodies burn more for the same activity, so keeping your weight up to date makes these estimates closer. If your watch or the gym machine gives you a figure, include it and Cal uses that instead.
Why Cal won't log your tracker's total daily burn
Many trackers show a "total calories burned today" figure. That number includes the energy your body uses at rest, which your calorie target already accounts for. Logging it as exercise would count your resting energy twice, so Cal declines and offers to log your individual sessions, or your tracker's active calories, instead.
Edit or remove a workout
On the exercise card in chat or under Exercise in your Diary:
- Tap Adjust to change the name, calories, duration or notes, or describe the change in your own words.
- Tap Remove to delete it.
You can also ask Cal, for example "change this morning's run to 350 calories".
Logged it twice?
If you send the same workout again within a few minutes, Cal recognises it is already saved and doesn't add a second copy. Logging the same activity twice in a day is fine when they really were two sessions.
How exercise affects your numbers
Exercise calories are subtracted from your daily total only if Show net calories is on (Account → Daily Targets → Options). Workouts recorded on a watch can also arrive automatically from Apple Health or Health Connect.
