How to log by voice

  1. Open the Chat tab.
  2. Tap the microphone at the right of the message box. You hear a short tone when it starts listening.
  3. Say what you ate, the same way you would type it. For example, "two slices of toast with peanut butter and a flat white".
  4. Tap the microphone again to stop.
  5. Your words appear in the message box. Check them, fix anything that is wrong, and tap send.

Cal logs it exactly as it would a typed message, including amounts, brands and several items at once. See Log food by typing.

When a word is misheard

Speech recognition sometimes gets food names wrong, especially brands. A few things help:

  • Read the text before you send it. It is quicker to fix a word in the box than to correct a log afterwards.
  • Foods you log often are recognised by how they sound. If a brand you have logged before comes through slightly wrong, Cal can still match it to the product you usually have.
  • If a log comes out wrong, tell Cal in chat ("that was quark, not cork") or tap Adjust on the log card. See Edit or delete a log.

Continuous Conversation Mode

Continuous Conversation Mode is in Early Access (Account → Early Access). With it on, you do not need to tap the microphone each time. Each thing you say is sent when you pause, and Cal replies out loud. In this mode Cal also receives the recogniser's other likely readings of what you said and picks the most plausible food.

If voice does not work

If you see "Voice input unavailable", check your connection and try again. The app also needs permission to use the microphone, which you can turn on in your phone's settings.
